Summer I Term 2017

We all cannot believe it is the summer term in Year 4 already!

As we came back to school after the holidays we had a very important week in school - Holy Week in lead up to Easter.  With Year 3, we performed an outstanding production on Maundy Thursday for parents and the rest of the school.  We also made Easter cards and baskets to celebrate Easter.  We had a lovely long weekend off school at home to celebrate with our families.

This term we have been learning about the Vikings period.  We have found out about the geography of Europe and the movement of the Vikings to invade and settle.  We have looked at timelines for the period and learnt about Viking life.   We enjoyed our visit to Danelaw at Murton Park, to live as Vikings for the day.  We learnt about the long house, how to make fire, Viking pottery, games of the period and how to defend our village. We most enjoyed having our teachers as our slaves for the day.  We look forward to learning more about this period next half-term.

Spring II Term 2017

What another lovely half-term we have had, the children in Year 4 are really working so hard and their behaviour is outstanding! As we came back to school after the half-term break we have had an important focus on Lent, started with our Ash Wednesday Mass in church. Throughout these weeks we have been focusing on prayer, fasting and giving. We have learnt lots from Fr. Michael with our class Mass in our classroom. We have enjoyed celebrating Mass in St. Anthony's church. We made over £150 for Catholic Care with our Good Shepherd fundraising in the hall

We have also enjoyed with the whole school our Super Sports Fundraising Day - we loved all the activities in the hall. It was a shame about our British weather outside though! We also had a very new experience, wearing our pyjamas and dressing gowns to school to celebrate World Book Day, with a focus on bedtime stories.

Our class represented our school at our local aqua festival at John Charles Centre for Sport. Every pupil contributed to a super team effort by taking part in different ability races in the pool and some of our pupils played in our class water polo team. Well done Year 4!

This term we have been continuing to learn about the Tudor period. We have found out more about the Tudor royals, with a particular focus on Henry VIII and his six wives. We have developed our art and DT skills by creating our own Tudor roses and sewing our own Tudor purses.

Everyone in Year 4 has been working very hard practising for our big Easter production after the holidays, on the Last Supper. We have learnt many new songs and have lots of lines to learn - we hope to remember them for our first week back in Holy Week.

Spring I Term 2017

We really cannot believe we are half way through the academic year already! What another busy half-term we have had. As we came back to school after Christmas, we enjoyed a wonderful Epiphany day, with Christmas dinner and a special magic show. We have also had a special focus day on the Sikh religion and learnt about the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh.

This term we have had a big focus on road safety and welcomed the road safety team for two days. We learnt about keeping ourselves safe on the road and in the car. We also enjoyed a visit to Dewsbury Road Library and have borrowed some books to enjoy at school. We organised and performed a special assembly for the whole school and our families, all about Candlemas. Now every class knows about this feast and has a newly blessed candle from Fr. Michael.

This term we have been learning about the Tudor period. We have found out about the geography of the United Kingdom. We have looked at timelines for the period and learnt about the Tudor Kings and Queens. We enjoyed our visit to Thackray Medical Museum for a workshop all about medicine during this time and about Henry VIII. We look forward to learning more about this period next half-term.

Everyone in Year 4 has been very excited about the launch of our new reading scheme - Bug Club! We have really enjoyed using the books and online accounts to develop our reading skills. Indeed, in our first week every child in Year 4 have accessed their online account. Well done everyone!

Autumn II Term 2016

What a super half-term Year 4 have had.  We started this with a beautiful All Saints Day Mass, which Year 5 led to help us celebrate this important feast day.  We also had a special RE day, focusing on the Hindu religion and the festival of Diwali - we made some wonderful Diva lamps.  Year 4 led a special assembly for the whole school and parents on 11th November about Remembrance Day and explained all about the history of this day.  Our class novel this half-term was 'Short and Spooky'.  We have all enjoyed reading lots of short spooky stories and developing our own spooky stories.  Year 4 writing is really developing well!  Our school held the council elections this half-term and we were very proud that we had nearly every child in Year 4 applied to take part.  Well done to those that were elected!

We had a wonderful start to Advent.  The children have made their own Christmas tree decorations for the tree in the hall.  Year 4 joined with Year 3 for our Advent assembly for the rest of the school and parents.  We told the story of both Mary and Joseph's experiences in the Nativity.  We also took part in the amazing Christingle service with the rest of the school in church.  Our oranges looked great and we enjoyed learning about all the symbols in the Christingle.  We now look forward to a restful Christmas holidays, enjoyed with our family and friends at home.
